The Shore Report
Live shore conditions plus Brian's current note for Ocean County and LBI homeowners.
July
If your upstairs is sweltering in July your attic is the problem. Poor ventilation traps heat that cooks your shingles from the inside and drives your cooling bills up.
- Check attic ventilation, ridge vents, soffit vents, and attic fans should all be clear
- Rinse siding and soffits with fresh water to remove salt air buildup
- Inspect deck boards and railings for sun and salt damage
- Check caulking around windows and doors for heat expansion cracks
- Look for lifted or curling shingles, a sign of heat and ventilation problems
- Check outdoor shower for leaks or mold
- Inspect and clean window AC units or change central AC filters
- Check hose bibs and outdoor irrigation for leaks
- Look under decks and porches for wasp nests
- Check boat lifts and dock hardware if applicable
- Rinse outdoor furniture and check for salt corrosion
- Check pool or hot tub chemistry if applicable
Black asphalt shingles can reach surface temperatures of 150 to 170 degrees on a hot July day. That heat transfers into your attic and drives up your cooling costs significantly.
